RHAMU SUB-COUNTY REVISIT BY #NOMAD GREEN BELT MOVEMENT AND WALK OF HOPE
Contrary to the thoughts of Wajir and Garissa Counties, of a more security prone zone, Mandera County provided a serene
and enthusiastic welcoming people. As twitted by some observer, when
the walk of hope team entered the Mandera County. I quote 'they entered
another planet'. That the picture they had been given about Mandera
Insecurity was totally different, is clear. People came out in large
numbers to walk and show the struggle for inspiration.
I call upon everone to keep the pride and morale of saving our County, progress ahead and prosper in future.
Rhamu Sub-County is an area affected by tribal clashes for two decades
but when we visited them, many social barriers were
diminished. A good example, the clan affiliation and euphoria that,
separated people in worship was a thing of the past, when the two
communities were assembling for a unique Eid-fitr prayer. It was crystal
clear that the celebration was conducted peacefully and harmoniously.
The team discussed with youths over other areas unaddressed band which
needed attention. Nomad green belt movement teams put more emphasis on how to come up with a Rhamu Sub-County
cultural day event ; on how two communities can display their cultures.
As part of community development, the team encouraged the residents
especially the youth in making proper use of their time. Some of the
activities they can actively support include;
1. Small scale
farming: they can utilize the River Dawa; the uncultivated bare lands,
write proposals to county governments for capacity building on best
farming and practice self-relience.
2. Active commitment in
communal work: planning on how to conduct mass wedding for our ladies
who had already sent their invitation request to us. Discouraging
divorce and build families.
3. Encouraged youths to get employment as our priorities. The youth can seek education and skills for employment.
A day to reflect our journey so far and what needs to be done going
forward. I therefore, seek the support of everyone to embrace unity and
build societies.
