Happy Friday night at Giraffe heroes 2015 Gala dinner which were held at Hotel Waterbuck, Nakuru County this evening. I Celebrated and rejoiced with other champions, friends, families which was a great opportunity to meet different people from all walks of life, connected and socialize. It was a very proud moment for me and the people of Nomad Kenya. This was an iconic celebration done for all that have put a lot of effort to ensure that we live in better communities. For me it was time to celebrate the successes we have realized alongside the people of Northern, coastal Kenya and beyond. We had great fun and I was able to hang out with many of my favorite friends and I also enjoyed a motivation speech of one of the key note speakers.

THE NOMAD GREENIE MAKING STRIDES IN NORTHERN AND COASTAL KENYA

http://www.nepjournal.com/the-nomad-greenie-making-strides-in-northern-and-coastal-kenya/

By Ibrahim A. Issack- NEP JOURNAL

Mandera County of Kenya is unique in many ways, it boarders Somalia to the East, Ethiopia to the west, Wajir to the south and Marsabit to the south west, a county with rich history. It is mainly inhabited by ethnic Somali who are mainly pastoralists. The main language of communication in this county is Somali, Kiswahili and some English and the population is predominantly Muslim. Mandera shares a vast and notoriously porous border with war torn Somalia. This has over time enabled militia to enter the county with significant ease causing a lot of untold troubles to both locals and non-locals.

The perennial droughts and inter-clan clashes add to the county’s woes. Majority of the population live in abject poverty with dwindling education levels as a result of inadequate infrastructure to support learning. The County has always been synonymous with chaos, intolerance and environmental degradation.
The County is known of producing Some of the top cream of the society holding envious positions in the country’s socio-economic and political set up, among them Kenya’s industrialization minister Adan Mohamed and other big names. However, the purpose of this article is not to celebrate these individuals but rather to appreciate the work of another son of Mandera County who has anonymously done a lot to ensure the betterment of Mandera County.

This none other than Abdikalif Adan, founder of The Nomad Green Belt Movement, Kenya Youth for change and The Fight against Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Maternal and child Mortality. This article rather highlights the story of a young man from a humble background and in the face of hardship and difficulties achieved greater heights than he himself could have ever imagined.

Adan was born and brought up in El-wak Sub-district of the then larger Mandera district, which today serves as the headquarters of Mandera South Sub-county. He went to El-wak DEB primary school, Mandera secondary and later to Wajir high secondary school. He was born to two political rivalry giant families, whom he later came to harmonize into achieving a better Mandera County.

From a tender age, Adan had an ambition to serve his fellow citizens of Northern and Coastal Kenya to bring change to the people’s social life. This was a deep rooted calling that constantly pushed him to work hard and achieve the dreams he has had for his life.

What motivates him, he says, is the marginalization of his people by successive government regimes. There had been efforts by both Kenyatta and Moi regimes to marginalize and treat the people from the wider northern region with contempt that had left thousands dead and more others maimed. These include calamities like the Wagalla and Malkamari massacres and constant military operations in Northern Kenya.
Poor infrastructure coupled with lack of social amenities only encouraged young Adan to find ways of uplifting his people from the misery. Adan thus feels he is on a divine sanction mission to save his people.

It all began in 2008 before he had joined an international bank in Kenya as a customer advisor. As he was watching evening news on a local TV station, stories revealing how people were suffering in parts of Northern Kenya caught his eye. During that period as a banker, he formed the Kenyan youth for change in coastal Kenya that helped to transform the lives of youth devastated by drugs and other harmful substance. He also spearheaded the formation of fight against malaria that had benefitted many people within that locality. He pioneered the eradication of Malaria through distribution of treated mosquito nets, indoor spraying of households to destitute people living in Kongowea of Mombasa as well as making an effort to educate the populace on the effective use of nets with an aim of cutting down on the prevalent infant mortality, eradication of Tuberculosis and through his concerted efforts to lower the prevalence of HIV/Aids.

He later returned to Mandera to join another local bank, where he also single handedly expanded Kenya youth for change and The Nomad Green Belt Movement in his home county. This noble projects and initiatives won the hearts and minds of people who helped his dream come true immensely. He has managed to plant thousands of trees in order to turn Mandera County from a semi-arid area to green productive county. This has in turn created employment for youth and women through agro-forestry for livelihood.

Notable Nomad green belt movement achievements are: Awareness creation among the people in Northern Kenya has been enhanced through information sharing. This is achieved mainly through local radio stations, public lecture and outreach drives. Need for clean and safe water, as the major goal was to promote water harvesting as well as plant over 30,000 trees out of which he planted 1,000 trees to mark his 32nd birthday.
He has also engaged youth in sporting activities to educate them on harmonious living with the rest of the communities in the region. Sports also provided the youth with sporting skills, networking, enhance relationship and exchange sporting programs between residents, clubs and villages.

The Kenya Youth for Change call voiced concern for integration, peaceful co-existence of communities in the Northern and Coastal Kenya regions marred by insecurity, marginalization, radicalization, extremism, identity and education crisis, prevalence of communicable diseases, child mortality, environmental conservation and poverty, preservation of cultural activities, pride, drug and substance abuse.

He is the Director and organizer of walk of hope project Mandera chapter, an initiative by young people from North Eastern (NEP) region to give hope to the community after numerous terror attacks left many hopeless and disillusioned. He and fellow youths braved the walk despite the hardship of terrain, wild mammals, scorpions, snakes, threats and fears of terror attack from Al-shabaab and other local tribal clashes. They had the longest and hardest walk in the desert, hot land and rock climbing mountains, one after another. He chose to sleep out in the jungle denying himself the comfort of his house.

His ability to motivate others was the crescendo of the success as he dedicated much of his time and conducted lots of community development activities in a marginalized underdeveloped villages on the coastal and Northern regions. More so, he put in lots of resources and financial inputs in purchase of medicine, fundraising for a burnt child, purchasing of seedlings and transporting them for long distances and ensuring that the community volunteers received them for planting in his Nomad Green Belt Movement in Mandera County and beyond.

He has so far endured lots of security risks along the path of undertaking community activities. However, this turns out to be more of motivation than what would cow him as an individual.

Adan cites that it is very hard for him to do volunteer work in some communities who are very harsh and very insensitive to people especially if one hails from other clans. However, he believes in God and considers himself as diplomat and Ambassador of change and peace.

Having had less time with his family because of frequent travelling and covering over 500 KMs twice every month, missed great friends in social circles and relationship but his aim and ambitions isn’t fulfilled until he puts smiles on the face of vulnerable people.

Adan paints the picture of a young man in a hurry to reach places, an extremely ambitious man with a tireless and indefatigable spirit. His normal day begins at 4am with prayers and reading Quran.

An avid reader who reads vastly, he dedicates his weekend and free times to programs intended to uplift the standards of society, he is driven by passion, has no boarder and time limit of doing community activities and expects nothing in return. His desire is to accord good care and love to all Kenyans regardless of their creed.

In Adan I see a true Kenyan environmentalist, health and peace ambassador, blogger, freelance writer, dreamer, walker, a lover of African history and cultures, a community crusader, revolutionist and a hero.

NAIROBI SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

The idea come as a result of an observation I made that solid waste haphazardly dumped without proper care. I have also seen a lot of companies collecting household, hotel, restaurant garbage yet the exercise is not effective enough hence exposing Nairobi people to health hazards. Most notable is the Eastland area with lots of business malls and high population areas.

The level of waste dumping is very high that create a hill of solid waste, in the pretense of collecting plastic and other materials for recycle, the area is hibernating place for criminals putting the residence around at risk.
As per the report of the meteorological department and other scientist heavy El-nino is expected in Kenya and other part of the world, at these juncture the new constructed roads and drainage patterns may get blocked due to waste swift by the rain to the drainage system thus the resultant flooding and damaging of newly constructed tarmac roads.

Mosquitoes as well as other parasitic insects breed in the area where waste is dumped and floods, will be high risks of insect disease transmissions for the people living around the area.

Households, hotels, hospitals and other business centers must have better site of keeping waste for easy collection of concern authority. Nairobi could have been greener and cleaner but the inhabitants have no sense of ownership in their environment. There is an urgent need for dumping facilities on every street of the Eastland’s areas. The business community they have to be enlightened on how to manage the waste from their business goods since the area is considered as a competitive business area. There is a need for training, participatory hygiene and sanitary transformation (PHAST).

TREE FOR LIFE

Tree have always been a sources of inspiration for people around the world, from tinny glimmer of hope signified by antiny sproud in the ground,to the resilient mighty oak standing alone after storm

Tree not only grow with us,but can often stay standing when we become nothing but etched into their bark.
One person can look at tree and see life; another sees death, where one person sees strenngth, another see vulnerability. Tree gives us life and their influence on us is never more apparent than in poetry. Nomad Green Belt Movement are preparing to conduct mass activities during Mashujaa day for planting trees of peace in honour of those Kenyan heroes who sacrifice their life for the independent we are enjoying right away.
Finally many thanks to volunteer initiator and lets join hand on 2oth October for the wonderful activity.

Thank you all!

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

DISABILITY STREAM LINING!

It does culturally believe that people with disability can't do farming practice and some of Kenyan disables cannot inherit farm's because of their natural disability. For the purpose of streamlining Nomad Green Belt Movement had learnt that Mr. Rekiso, a disable have a vast portion of dormant land that he inherited Islamically from his parents to show disability is not inability and that other disable to follow his footsteps. NGBM is in front line to motivate him to undertake agricultural activities to create alternative livelihood for him.

The land of his farming are very attractive, amazing, breathtaking if one walk inside to confirm for his eyes as it's images can be powerful enough to change things for the better, like many of his under going projects it has sparkled many people interest, causing constructive debate and often many times get so much attention and his diversity is his strength as he believes to bring together different skills.
NGBM, through reform of people with disability we motivated Mr. Rekeso and shared with him when he participated in Mandera County disabled Race for peace where he became 2nd position and qualified for the national competitions to represent Mandera County at Isiolo County where he managed to get position seven and he was also a trained volleyball coached for the people at Kasarani.

NGBM is currently organising his farming activities which are agro-forestry, interlocking brick making, poultry and bee hives project as they are consulting the area chief Mr. Hassan Mohamed Manur, agriculture extension services and youth enterprise development on creep way forward t
o promote the project which we believe as a pilot project for all people with disability that they can make their income.

Challenges he was facing; lack of water for farming and brick laying. It was expensive to undertake his agricultural project as he transport water far more than 4KM with donkey cat, lack of proper farm perimeter fencing and lack of farm tools and implement.

The NGBM have congratulated him for the awesome discovery and spreading awareness about such great place. He builds the foundation but now needs support from any interested well-wishers to help him in his journey. His work is legendary and definitely deserve to be seen and supported by everyone. We need to create an enabling environment where there is opportunity for entrepreneurship.

WIND DISASTER,

There was a big wind blow at Borehole 11 TOWN yesterday which caused property damage. The most immediate affected is Borehole 11 secondary school which the only dormitory of 60 beds roofing and windows were blown off.

The boarding students are currently exposed to the hot sun at day time and cold sleepless night. Observations is there, more changes in weather as we fear the predicted Elnino calamities. As community requested for immediate intervention from well wishers, national and county government quick response.

This is a single stream school it has no any other alternative of accommodating the students, while teachers strike is a big worry in schools such disasters will be more alarming.

PUBLIC AWARENESS

Awareness creation on importance of environmental conservation and use of alternative source of energy that is environment friendly is needed to restore back the eco-system and facilitate sustainable development.

NGBM is fighting back our indigenous spices of trees, away to return our ecology as it was back 19 century.

MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCE

Nomad Green Belt Movement is undertaking community based approach to management of natural resource, its only known that conflict in our area can be measured to address resource scarcity and noted that Nomad Green Belt Movement programs links signs that reduce insecurity in our area by establishing preconditions under which sustainable resource management can be accomplished.

PUBLIC AWARENESS ON INDEGINOUS TREE

‪#‎Happy‬ UNITED NATIONS International Day for Democracy! The rate of destroying forest has to relieve, since charcoal and firewood which are all contributing factors to destruction of indigenous trees that back in the years it was being used as a boundary mark by Nomad people and agro-forestry for their livelihoods.
Nomad Green Belt Movement is working on alternative energy to reduce their level of destruction.
Initiation of indeginous trees nursery to revive the eco-systems and teaches the local community on the importance of environment.

YOUNG CHILDREN FOR GREEN ENVIRONMENT

Nomad Green Belt Movement encouraged young children age below 10 years in Green County Afforestation campaign that its benefit should be realized in long time, shoulder them with responsibility from tender age and ponder them to the strengths of ownership.

Parents feel happy, proud and excited seeing their young kids planting trees, watering, caring and keeping to their heart. Provide children with proper training that can also benefit them for future generation and also promise them anyone who take environmental conservation to the next level would get a reward and a certificate.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

Today we are aiming at getting a group of youths together for wildlife conservation, if there's any person, group, organisation interested or has any good ideas. Kindly contact us.
Nomad Green Belt Movement major priorities are climate change, environmental justice, renewable energy and wildlife conservation.

As a species ourselves, we need to maintain the environment around us in order to keep the world as we know it alive. Forests provide us with oxygen, while oceans and land give us food. If these eco-systems are destroyed, they will be gone forever. Animals and plants interact and depend on each other in ways.

Wild life refers to all living organisms in their natural habitat other than cultivated plants and domesticated animals.

Importance Of Wild Life
1. To maintain ecological 'balance of nature' and maintain food chain and nature cycles.
2. It has economic value many wild plants provide useful substances like timber, paper, gums etc. And they also have wide applications in Ayurveda and other branches of medicine. Wild animals products are tusk, ivory, leather, honey etc.
3. Most important contribution of wild life for human progress is availability of large genepool for the scientists to carry breeding programmes in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.
4. Wild life provides aesthetic value to man.

The objectives of conservation and requirements for their achievement:
1. Maintenance of essential ecological processes and life-support systems.
2. Preservation of genetic diversity that is flora and fauna.
3. Sustainable utilization of species and ecosystems.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN FARM

Today as Nomad Green Belt Movement volunteer team kicked off our phase II project of creating friendly environment through small square farm (Kitchen farm), to plant different fresh fruits at different homesteads that can be used for domestic purpose and pocket friendly
With proper protection and watering any fruits that can germinate in upper highlands, can also survive in Northern Part of Kenya but what is needed is effort and commitment. Thus, it reduces idleness at home, led one to concentrate to the activity that can make them healthier and led happy life.
I'm doing these to encourage and support those willing to put in place the same practice at their respective homes, without covering a lot of distance to change the bigger picture of the Nomad people who reside on the desert land.

A UNION OF WORLD LITERACY

The world community continues to suffer from staggering rates of illiteracy. No nation will ever optimize its potential without a literate population. There is no greater remedy to corruption and oppression than literacy. Once a population is able to seek out information at its own accord it can break through centuries of stigmas, quarrels, and rifts. The purpose of a world literacy organization is to give all nations and peoples the ability to harness words and to express them at the accord of their own freewill.

REPLY TO ABDULLAHI DERROW ARTICLE ABOUT MY MUM VOLUNTEER HISTORY

Like a strong building needs a strong pillar you always need someone to support you; I have never known a stronger pillar than my Mum. Whenever the cloud of stress loomed, whenever the shadow of sadness waved, whenever tears reached my eyelids, whenever my lonely heart was worried my Mum has never hesitated to ask, what is not right, she is what keeps me living, she adds sweetness to my life and she always makes me fall in love with life. Everyone has a little bit of sorrow, everyone has a little bit of sunshine my Mum would always shield me from any kind of sorrow and would always smilingly watch the ray hope beaming on my face. She is a symbol if sacrifice!

For, every good reason my eyes are wet while reading this beautiful story written by this generous friend about my ‪#‎Mother‬, I don't have words to thank you brother Abdullahi Derow.

This proves how humane you are, by appreciating her you earn yourself a place in her heart. I will sure share this story with her. You simply described her the best! You made your mother Mama Mana Haji Kalla Dido proud by penning about her best friend.

May Allah bless you!

ARTICLE PREPARED BY ABDULLAHI DERROW ABOUT MY MUM VOLUNTEER HISTORY

Mama Halima Haji Abdullah Mohamed Jari (Popularly known as Ale Diqo).

A lot of time I find it very difficult to write about selfless individuals back home. Tonight I must however write a little about this beautifully created mother.

Ale Diqo is a model of strength and generosity, she is one most generous, kind - hearted sprit I have ever known, she is indeed a mother who everyone wish to have as a mum in every life, fortunate is the son who calls her mum. As a long time neighbour she watched me growing up in front of her eyes, I remember how mischievous one me is but every time I commit some mistakes(dropping stones on her house and I understand how noisy a mabati is when even a drop of rain drops on it. what about Elwak ' s heavy stones? ) she would find it very easy in her heart to forgive me, she never complained against me or has she ever reported me to my parents. Offcourse I will never forget tell how I cried one sunday morning upon seeing her sitting with my mum in our home, thinking that she came to report me to my parents because I teased a girl who was under her guardian the day before that Sunday(probably that girl is happily married now with five children if not more). I still don't know why she opted to cover up my mistake, perhaps her motherly instincts prevented her, or perhaps my tears sent a sign of guilt and repentance to her heart . She is a bank of secrecy!

My interaction with Mama Ale Diqo in late 2014 inspired me a lot. When her own son Abdikalif Adan presented to me an idea of environment conservation which gave birth to Nomad Green Belt movement she didn't think for a second, she hurriedly joined the idea giving us moral and material support without her effort Nomad Green Belt movement would have been a dream waiting for its time.

She started by providing a tiny nursery space inside her plot, watered the seedlings, protected the seedlings from street goats (kunuunos ), fuelled the vehicle we used in our first project and upto now she is taking care of more 2000 seedlings in her plot, she is the only woman who believes in a healthy environment and committed in Greening Mandera county and by extension the whole world. She is the backbone of Nomad Green Belt movement.

Mama Ale Diqo is part part of women for peace, she religiously believes in peaceful coexistence between communities in Mandera county. She is independent thinker who always finds times to vist girls schools to give motivational talks and advice young girls so that will grow up to become respectable young women.

Mama Ale Diqo is a God gift human to humanity! I celebrate her.
