THE GREEN BIRTHDAY OF MR. ABDIKALIF ADAN & NGBM 9th ANNIVERSARY

PLANT A BIRTHDAY TREE INITIATIVE
"On This Birthday, make a Difference".

Important Message to all world leaders, investors, all chiefs in NEP, village elders, nation builders, Team leaders of 'Nyumba Kumi (peace) Initiative', innovators, youth leaders and both Maendeleo ya wanawake na wanaume, visionaries, motivators, friends and those who share NGBM vision, we invite you to participate in our birthday as an NGBM volunteer member.

We take this earliest opportunity to thank you in advance for your participation by making upcoming special day of(31st July 2016) a reality. As this birthday event we dedicate a vision here that will bring great joy, happiness and environmental conservation to our lovely people.

As a member of Nomad Green Belt Movement (NGBM) team, we are providing free seedlings distribution to all friends of environment who will open-heartedly join hands to plant 5,000 TREES, establishing and identifying of two inpatient and outpatient parks at El-wak Referral Hospital, advocate for peace, love, unity and development on NGBM 9th anniversary and birthday of our founder.

Planting 5,000 - (five thousand) Trees in one day, is a great challenge but we believe that many hands can make work easier on environment and peace. The more our participants spending their time for community service on this day brings an exceptional birthday initiative to success as a whole for community development, the easier the job will be.

What a better way to honour our people to celebrate with us an occasion to have a chance to plant a Tree, a gift for the entire community, intending to have an impact on the future- Trees providing shades, attracting rain and preventing soil erosion.

We therefore, have decided to dedicate this special moment as a glimmer of hope thus significantly benefits the planet and an inspiration for others to emulate.

Great participants as of the event with trees to celebrate, marked “My birthday anniversary” by ensuring my recipients with long lasting GREEN Memory. As my volunteer team would also entertain an homestead audience with tips of planting Trees, and how to make our surrounding environment green and peace.

We appreciate everyone’s suggestion by the end of the event on 31st July 2016 Insha’allah. Collectively, we will make our environment green, peaceful and live better than we found.

Thank you all for your support and understanding!!!

A GLIMMER OF HOPE AND A WORD OF PEACE

The power to change the world is within each of us as a real patriotic citizens. The protection of every individual citizens is a provision in the constitution of our country, granted to every citizen.

NGBM goal is to promote a peaceful coexistence, law & order within communities. We seek to unite and englighten on good citizenship. We have undivided abhorrent for terrorism as it's everyone enemy.

NGBM is spearheading the peace objective of preaching peace and tranquility. The security of every person should be the core objective of the law enforcement agencies. Observing peace is a big deal and the responsibility of every patriotic individual to spread the word, we urge all, to enforce and observe, spreading the word to everyone you know, let's inculcate a new start to peace and begin to plant the seeds of peace, love, unity and development in our hearts and start growing process. The responsibility of disseminating positivity in the world has been assumed and hoisted directly onto their own shoulders.

NGBM planted 600 Trees in Wajir IDPs  homestead who are already the victims of circumstances during tribal clashes, to honour the victims and survivors of the terrorist attacks that happened at Northern, Coastal Kenya and the country at large by spreading the message of love, peace, unity and say no space for terrorism act within our soil.

The Trees planted is in honour or tribute to the following incidents.

1. West-gate attack- 67 died
2. Governor's convoy attack along fino Road in which Former Mandera County Council Chairman late Abdi Jibo was killed.
3. Attack on Chiefs from Mandera East
4. Garissa university students attack- 148 died
5. Lamu County (Mpeketoni attack)-48
6. Northern & Coastal church attack
7. Soldiers killed in the line of duty
8. Mandera residential night attack-14
9. Mandera bus attack-28
10. Mandera Quarry workers-36
11. Mandera Bus attack (locals protected Non-Muslim passengers preventing massacre)-#Hero Salah
12. The most recent aerial bombing of the four (4) little angels at #Elram that touches our heart, is a reminder of the terror ghost and it's fear. Such loss of innocent children is painful for both families and the entire world to witness such brutal massacre of children age between 3-7 years. In honour of these 4 angels, we have planted 20 Trees.

We commemorate in show of dignity and honour of our people we loved most but whose lives were cut short by inhumane acts of terror. We must know the ugly part of terrorism, condemn and fight such vices which has wrecked havoc on our people especially innocent people. We must work with the government in combating crimes.

Today as we condem terrorist attack in Istanbul airport, let us show solidarity and sympathy for the Turkish and foreigners who were killed in the aftermath of the deadly attack.
As everyone knows that information sharing is very crucial in the fight against terror.

THE FIGHT AGAINST THE TRIPLE EPIDEMIC IN MANDERA COUNTY (Dengue fever, Chikungunya and Cholera outbreak)

Cholera outbreaks can occur sporadically in any part of the world where water supplies, sanitation, food safety and hygiene practices are inadequate. Overcrowded communities with poor sanitation and unsafe drinking-water supplies are most frequently affected.

We focus on awareness creation to prevent the spread of cholera and malaria.

Essentially the public must insist on;
-Provision of adequate safe drinking-water
-Proper personal hygiene
-Proper food hygiene
Hygienic disposal of human excreta.
-Use treated mosquito nets and spray mosquito breeding areas to reduce malaria prevalence.

We hope for the best given the concerted efforts by concerned authorities or agencies.

A RARE BIRD RESCUE OPERATION

It was yesterday evening thirty minutes to break the 12 hours day fasting, I received a call from #friends of Nomad Green Belt Movement (NGBM) imploring to promptly attend to a bird that fall down when a huge Tree hosting its nest blown away by heavy wind was discovered. The Tree hit the ground, but didn't injure the bird. During the rescue the bird was motionless and spread its wings startled by the accident.

Over 109 birds get stuck when heavy wind blows away Trees hosting bird nests. Through my wife Madam Meiymuna Abdullahi and my effort, the operation took us nearly fifty minutes, finally we managed to release back outside 101 birds from folded bird net's, five eggs broken and we rescued hatchlings   strewn all over, some were over 2 days old.

The eight hatchlings we found were showing no signs of life, nonetheless, put on a table to figure out if we could revive them, unfortunately there were limited chances to rescue them as a vet physician skills, likely to resuscitated it was insuffiently lacking.

We moved away a bird nest from the fallen Tree and moved the nest to a nearby Trees. After we removed the birds were startled for some minutes, later the birds started stretching their wings one after the other, then off they flew.

As volunteers, we admire solving a new, and unique challenges, discovering different, with excitement to solve grass root challenges.
We treated a bird with stains of blood, at sides below its wings. Traditionally, we knew the excellent way to stop bleeding is to sprinkle the wound with cornflour which we did as rescue couple. We discovered birds don't have much blood, so we stemmed it quickly with cornflour.

We have discovered basic life saving skills in the process, solving natural phenomenon in respect and love for birds therefore  responding to the birds.

We treated  a bird with a wing injury and strapped the wing carefully so that it's movement is kept to a minimum and in the normal position to avoid more harm.

Imagine, the beauty of volunteering, this productive work is at zero cost and worthy course.

We feel proud sharing thrilling experiences in the field so that we impart relevant skills or display the kind of work we do during free times or in emergency cases relating to our work.

Thanks to the prompt caller who is #Friends of Nomad. We have named you a Saviour.

THE FIGHT TO MANAGE THE TRIPLE EPIDEMIC IN MANDERA COUNTY (Dengue fever, Chikungunya and Cholera outbreak)

The NGBM in partnership with Mandera South referral hospital management has launched a campaign, aimed at driving awareness for the need to pursue cleanliness, improve environment, sanitation and water treatments of shallow Wells at households, public utilities, mosques, hotels, private organisations and schools to fight against cholera and Chikungunya outbreak.

Cholera is an infection of the small intestine caused by the bacterium known as Vibrio cholerae while Chikungunya which is a mosquito-borne viral disease. It is an RNA virus that belongs to the alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae. The Chikungunya disease shares some clinical signs with dengue, and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common. There is no cure for the disease. Treatment is focused on relieving the symptoms.

NGBM strongly urge communities to take charge of their environment, health, and giving support to ongoing sanitation and hygiene and mosquitoes spray campaigns.

PROTECTION OF BIRDS

INSPIRED ACTION
Conservation must be guided by the birds, rather than borders. For local indigenous birds we advice and request any one who came across and find an uninjured baby bird out of the nest, depending on if it's a nestling (helpless, no feathers) or a fledgling (eyes open, feathers, not flying yet). Please take self responsibility and make sure you return it to its nest without damaging the birds nest and the baby bird.

NGBM encourage everyone in arid and semi-arid areas to leave water in their paddies for a couple of months, as it provides indigenous wildlife and migratory birds with stopover points.

The NGBM volunteer outreaches without borders have been a game changer in Northern Kenya and beyond with its great network. We are highly proud of having such step in volunteers journey!

#ProtectBirds

PROTECTION OF BIRDS

Take a look at your home from an aspect of birds. Apart from sufficient supply of food and clean water, birds also need places to hide and nest as homes.
We all share some similarities with animals, as human being, e.g shelter, need for food, healthy living and protections.our habitat depends on our actions.

Birds will feel your rewarding care such as helping to control insects, farm pests and mosquitoes.

Protecting birds from climate change will require help from all of us. Does anyone have experience with these? or protecting our birds.

Cats kill a huge number of important migrating birds every single day, due to their instinct to hunt.

Join NGBM to protect the birds while still allowing your cat their freedom and build their relationship.

#Shieldbirdsprotect

IMPROVED ROAD ACCESS & GLOBAL MARKET

With improving road access and global market at our disposals, we must improvise the natural resources we're endowed with, to significantly develop Northern Kenya region, at the same time protecting environment from exploitation. It is important that we protect wildlife and wild habitats for future generations to enjoy. Saving the wildlife requires a global coalition, so while we would love your support, we think the most important thing is for all of us to support work we truly believe in.

#Where there is love, there's hope!

STRAY ANIMALS LOITERING ON STREETS POSE RISKS

Stray cattle's roaming on streets are not a good picture to potential investors. A spot check by NGBM team revealed that stray cows, dog and goats are still loitering in some of the streets of Wajir, Mandera and Garissa County. Loitering animals such as dogs, cows, sheep and donkeys are becoming an eyesore in every town and some are major cause of accidents when crossing the roads or standing on major busy roads. This is a cause for worry and something must be done to address this hazardous norms.

Now that county government have been fully devolved, we encourage that enforcement officers should detain any animal which will be found loitering. It could have been better to centralise the livestock department. Some of the advantages to the livestock keepers is;
1. It could have urbanised the Nomadic people because if the cattle is in a good health, environment that is safe, it would reduce the urban-rural migration.

2. The number of school going children will increase due to reduction of illiteracy.

3. The resource conflicts will eventually reduce. Incident of community conflict over boundaries and fight over water and grass shall dwindle.

4. Once Livestock keeping is nationalised and is in the range that can easily be accessible, it will attract the stakeholders to come and buy from the ranch which creates easy access to the market.

5. The cattle movement in search of pastures and water will reduce thus enabling better health conditions hence increase in weight for high price.

6. Less report of cattle attacked by wild animals like lion and hyena or missing cattle's due to negligence of caretaker.

The governments should give directives or warn residents who own the stray animals that they risk paying hefty fines if their animals were to be arrested loitering town due to menace they create. We advise county governments that if at all we desire to attain or regain the glory of being the cleanest town in the country, all stray animals should be cleared off the roads or towns.

WE'VE GOT BIG NEWS!

Find Your Regional Park, a public awareness and education campaign. There's so much to tell you and this is only ongoing in NGBM wildlife conservation campaign on the importance of the natural beauty preserved in Northern KENYA and the importance of conservation and sustainable management of those places in NFD counties.

Many don't understand the significance of natural wildlife and nature preservation!

We need parks to be revived in Northern Counties and make proper use of the existing one's:-
1) National parks are one of the major source of revenue for both national and county government.
2) It is a recreation for the people of Northern Counties. Tourist lodge and horse race and Camel race course should also be established there.
3) It is an educational destination for many schools and colleges that are coming up in Northern Kenya.
4) The upcoming of University in five counties in Northern Kenya in future will need biology research station. Surely, park will provide that important resource in near future.
5) We will preserve and protect our indigenous wildlife, both indigenous fauna and Flora
6 ) The land that is nationally gazetted land for wildlife conservation, preserved for some of these important activities, alternative land must be sort for the occupiers and build the relationship between human and wildlife.

The park should be made free for upcoming important activities. Northern Kenya is growing and it will grow fast if we properly develop every sector likely to attract investors and for our own socio-economic development.

CLIMATE CHANGE

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE: The year 2015 was the hottest year ever recorded. Climate change is real and man made as agreed upon by a vast majority of scientists and a vast majority of countries some now struggling for existence.

Climate Change is irreversible right now. The Earth is going to continue to warm no matter what we do in our lifetime. And it's going to be unpleasant. But we can stabilize it before it runs out of control and becomes a global killer.

It's important to hold onto hope.

GOVERNMENT & PARTNERS HEALTH INTERVENTION MEASURES, REMARKABLE INDEED

Mandera County has a population of about 1.2 million people with 64 functional health facilities.

The county is facing disease outbreaks such as cholera, dengue fever and chikungunya.

Chikungunya, a viral disease which is spread by infected Aedes mosquito, has no cure, except painkillers to relieve the pains.

Currently only 92 patients are admitted at the County Referral Hospital out of the at least 540 people who were admitted in hospital.
Chikungunya was first reported on May 25.

The ongoing Chikugunya outbreak in Mandera has not even spared Mandera County leaders such, HE Governor, CEC Health, and among others. Ever since the virus was confirmed the county government and stakeholders have been working round the clock to contain the spread of the diseases. However, few of our Volunteer teams turn out to be the victims, but braved it the situation to assist by reducing the impacts and relieving the condition of the sick.

We thus advise the public on prevention. To prevent Aeties mosquito bite wear long sleeved shirts, trousers and smear your face, hands with Mosquito repellent jelly and use treated mosquito net.

The Ministry of health has distributed over 5000 insecticide treated mosquito nets and 500 litres of chemicals for indoor spraying. In addition, engaged the community health volunteers to conduct door to door visits to identify and spray mosquito breeding sites. The Ministry of health (National) is partnering with the County government of Mandera to carry out public health education campaigns in the region.

Let me take earliest opportunity to thank Mandera County health workers, partners and volunteers for the good job on their interventions. Already the efforts are bearing fruits and the county stakeholders should look into preventive measures for future avoidance on such disaster recurrence.

We thank Mandera County for scaling up hygiene and sanitation measures to control and prevent the spread of Cholera.

We thank and hail development partners for their continued support to the county and national government to contain disease outbreaks.

Thanks to WHO, Kenya Red Cross Society, MSF Kenya, UNFPA, UNICEF, AMREF, OCHA and IGAD.
