PUBLIC AWARENESS OF DEFORESTATION

CAMPAIGN GREEN COUNTY: PUBLIC AWARENESS ON DEFORESTATION, 2015 & BEYOND
LET’S JOIN HANDS IN DISCOURAGING WANTON DESTRUCTION OF THE NATURE!

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses, are lost due to negative human activities. In recent times, pastoralists have embarked on cutting trees for fencing of plots, firewood and charcoal. This has depleted the positive impact of trees providing cool weather and serene biodiversity. Tropical rainforests produce about 30% of our planet's fresh water.
Some other common reasons for wanton destruction of tree include;
  • Making land available for housing and urbanization
  • Harvesting  timber to create commercial items such as paper, furniture and homes
  • creating ingredients that are highly prized consumer items, such as the oil from palm trees
  • Creating room for cattle ranching
·         Common methods of deforestation are burning trees and clear cutting. These tactics leave the land completely barren and are controversial practices.
In our effort to enlighten the wider community on the adverse effects of deforestation, we wish to elaborate the looming implications resulting from this massive destructive on our nature.
First of all, deforestation is a contributor to global warming, and is often cited as one of the major causes of the enhanced greenhouse effect. Tropical deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of world greenhouse gas emissions.
Deforestation causes carbon dioxide to linger in the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide accrues, it produces a layer in the atmosphere that traps radiation from the sun. The radiation converts to heat which causes global warming, which is better known as the greenhouse effect.
Plants remove carbon in the form of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during the process of photosynthesis, but release some carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere during normal respiration. Only when actively growing can a tree or forest removes carbon, by storing it in plant tissues.
In addition to this, both the decay and burning of wood releases much of this stored carbon back to the atmosphere. In order for forests to take up carbon, there must be a net accumulation of wood. One way is for the wood to be harvested and turned into long-lived products, with new young trees replacing them.
Secondly, the water cycle is also affected by deforestation. Trees extract groundwater through their roots and release it into the atmosphere. When part of a forest is removed, the trees no longer transpire this water, resulting in a much drier climate. Deforestation reduces the content of water in the soil and groundwater as well as atmospheric moisture. The dry soil leads to lower water intake for the trees to extract. Deforestation reduces soil cohesion, so that erosion, flooding and landslides ensue.
As a result, the presence or absence of trees can change the quantity of water on the surface, in the soil or groundwater, or in the atmosphere. This in turn changes erosion rates and the availability of water for either ecosystem functions or human services.
Tree roots bind soil together, and if the soil is sufficiently shallow they act to keep the soil in place by also binding with underlying bedrock. Tree removal on steep slopes with shallow soil thus increases the risk of landslides, which can threaten people living nearby.
Deforestation on a human scale results in decline in biodiversity, and on a natural global scale is known to cause the extinction of many species. The removal or destruction of areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity. Forests support biodiversity, providing habitat for wildlife;
The new procedures to get amounts of wood are causing more harm to the economy and overpower the amount of money spent by people employed in logging.
It’s therefore vital for environmentalists to create awareness on the importance of conserving our environment; otherwise the current trend is alarming.
Nomad green belt movement thus, encourages afforestation, and protection of the environment for superfluous ecosystem. According to our survey, worst areas affected by deforestation are Banisa constituency, Takaba, and to some degree, El-wak south part of the constituency.
We must act to stop this dangerous habit especially, burning trees and cutting. Public education and information is practically important to reduce the increasingly wanton destruction happening on daily basis. These tactics leave the land completely barren and are controversial practices, the forest guards should be employed for the law forbidding deforestation to take shape. Something must be done, and that should be to guide the communities in the region about environmental conservation and planting of significant numbers of trees to replace the decades of deforestation.
Nomad green belt movement plans to visit areas largely affected, with a view to eradicate the problem.

Bear with us in conserving our environment together!

"SEVEN BILLION DREAMS, ONE PLANTED CONSUME WITH CARE". 5th JUNE 2015

CAMPAIGN GREEN COUNTY, WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY (WED), MANDERA SOUTH REFERRAL HOSPITAL, HEALTH CENTERS, DISPENSARIES, 2015 AND BEYOND:
"SEVEN BILLION DREAMS, ONE PLANTED CONSUME WITH CARE". 5th JUNE 2015
The volunteer teams marked world environmental day 2015, with enthusiasm and passion for environmental concerns. The team received a worthwhile appreciation from walks of life in the Town and accompanied by El-lwak Referral Hospital medical teams led by Dr. Alinur Billow, the area Senior Chief joined the feat, to lend hands in the following activities; planting trees, cleaning the entire Hospital vicinity and donations of four dumping drums to the facility. Following robust discussions by both, the medical team and Nomad Green Belt Movement teams on beautification on voluntary tree planting exercise within four corners of Hospital, the medical teams were amazed with the speed at which Nomad Green Belt Movement teams spearhead this gallant project aimed at environmental conservation.
The project principally aimed at bolstering the crisis that is bedeviling the universe as a result of Global warming. Our primary consideration was to devise a design which would effectively and efficiently deliver on the Nomad green belt movement volunteers, ambitious objectives, which has been set as our development goals to unfold the sharing of beautiful Greener surroundings for the entire Sub-County Health facilities.
Bear with us in conserving our a environment together!

CAMPAIGN GREEN COUNTY, FREE SEEDLINGS DISTRIBUTION, 2015 AND BEYOND:
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2015 (WED)- 5th JUNE 2015
Nomad Green Belt Movement volunteer teams, not only give their abundant time, but also inject relevant expertise and resources, in place such as sustainable measures.
The teams participated in improving and beautifying different homesteads of the deserving people we hail from and serving their neighbourhoods, after our volunteer teams provides free seedling distribution.
By planting trees and creating forests, many of the commercial needs of human beings are fulfilled, while not destroying what is left of the planet.
Afforestation is, therefore, a practice that has been propagated by government and non-government agencies of many countries as a way to stop over-exploitation of nature. In this regard Nomad green belt movement stand with the rest of the world in promoting the tree planting by providing interested communities with free seed distribution of seedlings.
Our Earth has been constantly trying to cope with the way in which human beings use natural resources, clear forest lands, cut trees, and contaminate the air, land, and water. Industrial revolution, population bursts, and pollution create permanent damage to the earth, and the result is global warming and climate change.
In such situations, Nomad green belt movement initiatives is to support something that can help extend the life of the planet and its living organisms is the increase of natural resources and decrease of exploitation of these resources.
We wish you all the best in marking the World Environmental Day 2015. Best of Luck!

CAMPAIGN GREEN COUNTY, SUB-COUNTY, 5 KMs COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF HARMFUL OBJECTS ALONG NAIROBI-MANDERA HIGHWAY, 2015 AND BEYOND:
WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY 2015
Nomad green belt movement volunteer teams with a ground-breaking and vision has launched the collection and disposal of harmful objects along Nairobi-Mandera highway (B9).
The thorns, broken bottles, needles, empty debris, nails and different sharp objects have caused havoc and destructive to both motorists, and all those crossing the road on foot or motorcyclists.
This major road is the lifeline of the community; we have objectively selected this activity, because of the increasing unfavorable waste strewn all over along the roads. The risk factor is that, if not disposed off, will increase the cost of repairing punctured tyres, doctors’ bills for treating thorns wounds, which negatively impact on the living standard of the community and can turn down the economy of the county.
The volunteering teams have the capacity to waste management and disposal with focus on environmental protection and the need to promote actively, to strengthen and expand waste re-use and recycling systems for quality programs, very proactive and performance orientation.

CAMPAIGN GREEN COUNTY, MADARAKA DAY, 2015 AND BEYOND:
DAY 4: ERADICATION OF PROSOPIS JULIFLORA AND RE-PLANTING:
Our volunteer teams would like to react to the negative impacts caused by the growing Prosopis juliflora in our environment.
Various Prosopis species have been introduced to Africa over the past 190 years for their beneficial qualities which include erosion control, shade, fuel wood, building materials, and pods for animal and human consumption in arid and semi-arid regions. The fact that there are clear economic uses to this species but severe negative consequences of Prosopis Juliflora invasion makes this conflict of interest species.
Environmental Hazard
Prosopis Juliflora, locally known in Somali as (Ali Garoob), can be a very aggressive invader and replaces native vegetation and takes over range-lands. Negative effects include complete loss of pasture and range-lands for both domestic and losses due to access to water, illness and death of livestock due to eating. Other impacts are loss of cropland, the costs of repairing tyres punctured or destroyed by thorns, and doctor's bills for treating thorn wounds. Prospisb Juliflora can block irrigation channels, obstruct roads and block smaller trails completely affecting access to pasture, croplands, water sources and fishing areas.
We appeal to the wider community, in the region, to collectively, clear Prospis Juliflora along the streets, residential homestead and obstructed lanes. Prosopis Juliflora, will not only affect people's livelihoods but also key sectors of the economy. It is evident that Kenya's vast arid and semi-arid lands up-to 80% of land area are at risk and the longer the wait, the more difficult it will be to control or eradicate the species.
Consequently, to protect public health, urban ecosystems and groundwater depletion, it is proposed that the tree should be eradicated and replaced with more appropriate species for the urban environment such as the multipurpose shade tree Azadiracta indica (Neem tree).
NGBM team is welcoming and encouraging every household, to join their hands in elimination process of the species from homesteads and their surroundings on voluntary basis, in return, we shall provide two seedlings to each volunteer, to plant in the neighborhoods, so as to replace the destructive activities of Prosopis Juliflora.
Nomad green belt movement teams wishes to thank you for your support and a Happy Madaraka Day 2015 Achievement!
